End of life discussions can be difficult.  Our society as a whole believes it is "taboo" to discuss death.  I have found that the more a client and their family are able to express their concerns, fears and expectations for the end of their life the more at peace they are. My years of experience as a medical social worker provided me the opportunity to meet with patients who were dying and their families and guide them to make difficult decisions.  I would ask you what you value in life and how you wish to be treated in specific medical situations in which you are unable to speak for yourself.  These conversations include: durable power of attorney for healthcare/advanced directives, hospice, life-saving measures, funeral preferences and most importantly quality of life issues.
